Chiropractic seeks to optimise the alignment of the skeletal system. In 1895 D D Palmer, by manipulation and spinal adjustments, restored hearing to a patient after a 17 year loss. He believed that the flow of nervous impulses could be interrupted by abnormal movements in joints (subluxations) giving rise to a number of health problems. Restoring spinal alignment allowed the body to overcome health problems even if they were away from the spine.

Joints may be put under excessive strain through injury, accidents or traumas. Poor posture may contribute to this which in turn may affect other areas of the body. Subluxations may also aggravate existing health conditions where they are not the underlying cause.

The chiropractor will take a full case history and asking about lifestyle factors that may be relevant. X-rays may be taken if required. The spine and soft tissues are manipulated as determined by the practitioner.
