What Is Craniosacral Therapy?Craniosacral therapy was developed by William Sutherland, an osteopath, towards the end of the 19th century. He discovered that physical, mental and emotional health are bound up with intrinsic movements of the bones in the skull. These are rhythmic tidal motions which can be felt as palpitations in the cerebro-spinal fluid of the pelvic areas as well as the skull. The craniosacral practitioner feels for these very small contractions and expansions which gives information on the patient’s wellbeing. After manipulation by the practitioner, changes in pressure lead to changes that benefit the body as a whole.
The therapy is extremely gentle just using a light touch. Resulting from injuries and illnesses, deeply held patterns of disease accumulate during one's lifetime becoming fixed into body tissues. Craniosacral therapy influences these disease patterns with the potential to transform resistance and restriction at a fundamental level, and so eliminating problems and restoring health.
Because it is such a gentle therapy it is suitable for babies, young children and the elderly.
