What is Pilates?
Pilates is a complete exercise method, a body condtioning routine, designed to build flexibility, agility, endurance, improve co-ordination and posture, and to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance. Classes focus on individual areas of the body whilst using exercises that integrate the body as a whole to restore it to optimal muscular and skeletal functioning that is less prone to injury.
This holistic way at looking at exercise sets Pilates apart from many other forms. Joseph Plates believed that the health of the mind and body are closely linked and so his exercises include focusing on breathing, concentration and flowing movements. Pilates can be beneficial for everybody whatever age and whatever fitness level.
Pilates focuses on building back, abdominal and pelvic muscles sculpting them without adding bulk and improving posture, toning stomach and thigh muscles. The exercises are low repetition, low impact stretching and conditioning exercises. The student learns how the body works to restore mind body harmony.
The pilates system offers two ways to exercise. mat exercises require only a floor mat using your own body weight as resistance. The second method uses various machines to tone and strengthen the body.
