Foot Reflexology
The beginnings of reflexology can be traced back to ancient times but the modern system of eflexology was developed by Dr. William Fitzgerald, an American, about 100 years ago. He found that pain could be relieved in one part of the body by applying pressure to another part. He believed a flow of energy linked them. He named this "zone therapy". It was later developed by physiotherapist Eunice Ingham (1889-1974) from the USA. The foot was divided up into areas that corresponded to the various organs, galnds and systems of the body. The whole of the body was represented in the feet. The right and left foot corresponding to the right and left sides of the body respectively. One could stimulate an organ or gland by applying pressure to that part of the foot (reflex) representing that organ.
Reflexology is a holistic therapy since foot massage is said to relieve stress, promote a sense of well being, improve blood supply and nerve function, boost energy and vitality and encourage the self-healing mechanisms of the body.
